HORSE TRAINING
With regard to horses who are at the Ranch for backing, we usually recommend a minimum backing time of 6-8 weeks. During this time we emphasise the ground work, moving away from pressure, round penning and accustoming saddle and rider. Eventually we get to the point that the horse can begin their ridden education in relation to schooling and hacking out on the lanes and bridleways, keeping their minds as relaxed as possible. Horses that are started in Western riding are able to either continue their education in Western or alternatively go down the ‘English’ route. We have also found in the past that many horses who object to the shorter rein contact in English riding are much more relaxed when ridden Western due to the longer reins. Quarter horses are the ideal horses for Western riding due to their confirmation and temperaments, however, there are many non-Quarter horse types that are competing at high levels in Western disciplines throughout the United Kingdom. All in all, we feel Western training methods benefit all horses, no matter
what their breed. If you have any queries about training your horse or pony then please do get in touch. Please contact Elaine direct on 01437 541298 or by email on
